Happy Sunny Friday everybody! Sun hats, sunnies and sundresses to the ready. Another great Sewing Bee this week, celebrating clothes from West Africa. Who could fail to be impressed by the stunning, colourful boubous made in the final challenge. Such beautiful airy shapes, so breezy and comfortable and all so different. The colour matching from Lizzie’s was exquisite, such a triumph and Mia’s fabric was sensational. And we absolutely loved Lauren’s fun fan fabric boubou with furry cuffs and the story behind it. Not a bad boubou amongst them we say!
If you are feeling inspired by the Sewing Bee to make a comfortable dress please don’t forget our own sun dress class coming up on Saturday 17th June. This dress is an easy sew for those more advanced or a perfect project for those beginners wanting to take their sewing to the next level.
Sew an Easy Summer Dress workshop
Stitch! are very pleased to have been successful in receiving a grant from Enfield Council’s Enfield Neighbourhood Fund of £14,300 to run wellbeing crafting, crochet/knitting and sewing workshops that build a supportive, vibrant, creative environment for members of our local community supporting their mental health and making skills accessible in a time when many people face a cost of loving crisis. If you are interested in crafting, sewing, knitting and crochet and are on Universal Credit then please get in touch as we may have some free places available on our workshops.
Has anyone else seen the “Souls Grown Deep like the Rivers” at The Royal Academy? This exhibition highlights the 20th century art produced in a small community of black artists from the American South. We went last weekend and one of the most interesting things about the show (from a stitcher’s point of view) are the extraordinary quilts. They are vibrantly exciting and wonderful illustrations of how something entirely practical, made to be used as a bed covering, from scraps that happen to be available, can be really beautiful.
There was a lot written about these works which illustrated emotional meaning in the use and placement of the materials but we also felt they are the best examples of what happens when imagination and artistry collide with poverty and need. Something magical happens and even though they are not ‘perfect’, they are wonderful to look at and must have been fabulous to use. The exhibition is on until 18th June so you still have time to visit the RA please visit and see for yourself.
Lovely new sewing boxes in stock! Grab them while they last!
