Happy Friday from Stitch! 12.05.22

hello • 12 May 2023

Peekaboo!

A short week and Friday is here again! We hope everyone enjoyed the bank holiday whether you were street partying, crafting or just taking it easy. We were glued to our screens on Saturday for the pure spectacle of colour and grandeur at the Coronation.

What a beautiful piece of work produced by the Royal School of Needlework- the anointing screen with the symbolic tree design representing the 56 member countries of the Commonwealth. The King’s cypher was positioned at the base of the tree, representing the Sovereign as servant of the people and the beautiful golden leaves were embroidered by staff and students from the Royal School of Needlework, as well as members of the Worshipful Company of Broderers, Drapers and Weavers. Stunning.

And in terms of outfits at Westminster Abbey - interesting observations at our knit and natters this week included that there weren’t as many gloves and tiaras as we expected! (although Katie Perry did oblige). But we were particularly fond of several of the cape dresses, as worn by President Biden’s granddaughter. Annisa, who co-ordinates all our classes, has been inspired for a wedding she is attending in July and is looking for a suitable pattern so we will keep you posted. We think a cape dress oozes sophistication and any fans of The Diplomat drama on Netflix will have undoubtedly admired the female lead’s Maticevski Cape detail dress in the first episode. We love the cream, pastel and lemon hues we are seeing in dresses at the moment. Summer vibes at last, hooray!

New Amigurumi Workshop alert!

Saturday July 15th & 22nd July 10:30-12:30
New workshop alert! A two day workshop to learn to crochet amigurumi by making this little cuddly teddy, with Kay. Amigurumi is the Japanese art of making stuffed toys, usually crocheted but sometimes knitted. The toys are usually animals such as teddy bears and birds. Crochet amigurumi is made using a spiral technique with no obvious seams and a firm tension so the stuffing doesn’t show. The technique uses double crochet to create a firm fabric, increasing and decreasing to create the body of the characters. In this two day workshop we will be making a small teddy. This class is not recommended for a beginner crocheter but is a brilliant addition to an enthusiastic crocheters skills.

In this workshop you will learn to make a versatile, reusable, multipurpose sandwich and snack bag you can throw in with your normal laundry wash. Made using minimal components, therefore reducing costs, simplifying processes, and making it easier to clean, the bag is constructed from four pieces of fabric, small enough to be cut from old garments or bed linen you may want to recycle.
